Cyclades Islands entered Greek sovereignty in 1833. The Cyclades is an island group in the Aegean Sea, southeast of mainland Greece and constitutes one of the administrative entities of Greece. In terms of administration they are divided in 9 provinces, 20 municipalities and 11 communities. They form one of the island groups which constitute the Aegean archipelago. The Cyclades comprise about 220 islands, the major ones being Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Folegandros, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Syros, Tinos, and Thera or Santorini. Most of the smaller islands are uninhabited. Ermoupolis city (37°27N 24°54E), on Syros, is the capital and administrative center of the prefecture. The islands are peaks of a submerged mountainous terrain, with the exception of two volcanic islands, Milos and Santorini (Thera). The total area of the islands is 2572 km² with 120000 inhabitants.

Ermoupoli was founded during the Greek Revolution in the 1820s, as an extension to the existing Ano Syros township, by refugees from other Greek islands because of the War. It soon became the leading commercial and industrial center of Greece, as well as its main port. The renowned Greek Steamship Company was founded in the city in 1856. Thousands of ships were built in the various Syros shipyards.

Ermoupoli was eclipsed by Piraeus in the late 19th century. In the following decades the city declined, remaining the administrative center of the Cyclades islands. In the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, its economy has significanty improved, based on the sectrors of services, industry, education and tourism.

Moutsouna village is located on the eastern side of the island, below the quaint Apiranthos village. Its trademark is the huge rock formations at the edge of the beach, a phenomenon considered rare for the landscape of Naxos. You can view the small uninhabited Makares island on the east side; but also Donoussa, Amorgos, Keros, Schoinusa, Irakleia and Ikaria.
Tourism has not reached the area yet, and you’ll encounter only a single-digit number of houses around.
